this is a project i did for my children's book class. the assignment was to choose a story and illustrate a book using no text at all, only drawings. so i decided to use a story my grandma told me when i was little, i just adapted it a little bit.
when i drew this book, i was playing okami and lostwinds (wiiware) by that time, and needless to say i got totally inspired by those games. they truly are gorgeous looking and both have some story aspects that i completely love. so, clearly, by the time i designed this entire book, i had okami and lostwinds in mind : ) you can see it in the character design (the little boy is inspired by toku from lostwinds), the sumi-e style, and yukio kaami (which means snow wolf) being a baby version of amaterasu! i also used the same name as lostwinds protagonist to this story, tokku.
before anything, please keep in mind i had less than a month to illustrate the entire book, between other assignments. from storyboard, sketching, technique, coloring, and mostly importantly, having no right to use any words to tell the story : ) if you have the okami soundtrack, i recommend reading this book while listening to track 319 "Kamiki Festival". it inspired me a lot while i was drawing this book.
this illustrated book is dedicated to my late grandma, who i believe would love to see this book if she was here : ) and is also dedicated to all the artists, illustrators and designers responsible for the incredible creations of Okami and Lostwinds, whom inspired me to illustrate this children's book and many many other things.
i went through the story and i love it. It is like the tortoro movie, heart warming and beautiful. I also compliment your source of ideas and your art. You are a great artist
i'm flattered you compared it to a masterpiece like totoro
